#ProdChat – 08/14/13 – #Kindness

For this week’s #ProdChat, we discussed the importance of kindness in our personal productivity both at home and at work.

  1. George Saunders’s Advice to Graduates – “What I regret most in my life are failures of #kindness.”  http://ow.ly/nWmNZ prodchat
  2. So, let’s start with introductions! In a tweet, tell us about you. #prodchat
  3. @nmhouston Welcome to the #productivity chat, Natalie! :-) Let’s see how many people join us for a mid-August convo! :-P #prodchat
  4. A1: Well, since I came up with the topic, I guess you can guess that I do believe that #kindness does help #productivity! LOL #prodchat
  5. It’s the lubricant of all social interactions if truth be told #ProdChat
  6. A1 Agreed. Kindness to yourself first & foremost helps productivity — not trying to do too much, or at the wrong time #prodchat
  7. @nmhouston I definitively believe it. People don’t realize how kindness is working toward and from them at all times. #prodchat
  8. Sometimes it’s so rare I wonder if ppl still know how to recognize it!
    #ProdChat
  9. A1: A positive attitude helps productivity, so I would think kindness would too. #prodchat
  10. @CliffSiegel1 Well, my hope is that #kindness just happens by people at times even when they don’t recognize all the time. #prodchat
  11. A1 sometimes sending an acknowledgment that just says “got your question, will reply in a few days” is a kind gesture. #prodchat
  12. MT @nmhouston A1 Kindness to yourself first & foremost helps productivity — not trying to do too much, or at the wrong time #prodchat
  13. RT @profkrg A1: A positive attitude helps productivity, so I would think kindness would too. #prodchat
  14. Q2: WHARTON, HARVARD & YALE RESEARCHERS: EMPLOYEES DOING ALTRUISTIC TASKS INCREASED SENSE OF #PRODUCTIVITY. WHY DO YOU THINK? #prodchat
  15. Another professional I work w/has a hair trigger temper. My goal is to be nothing but kind to her this year. Working out well #ProdChat
  16. As a personal coach, I take a holistic view of productivity — is best when connected to your core values, like kindness #prodchat
  17. A2: Giving feels better than getting, at its core. And therefore, I think workers are willing motivated by that #kindness. #prodchat
  18. @nmhouston LOL yes in theory… we’ll see how the plan works out with this one! #ProdChat
  19. True altruism boosts your energy, rather than draining it. #prodchat
  20. RT @nmhouston True altruism boosts your energy, rather than draining it. #prodchat
  21. @nmhouston Yes, and who doesn’t want to have #kindness at the core of their moral compass? #prodchat
  22. @CliffSiegel1 That’s fantastic! Compassion goes so much farther than vitriol. #prodchat
  23. @rsidneysmith A2) I think most people would like to believe their job makes a difference #prodchat
  24. @rsidneysmith well the vitriol is right there under the surface believe you me… haha but it does tend to poison the waters #ProdChat
  25. @CliffSiegel1 Hahaha…well self-control is another of those virtues. I hope you can continue the #kindness and it pays dividends. #prodchat
  26. Q3: KINDNESS ISN’T ALWAYS *DOING* (E.G., LETTING SOMEONE “SAVE FACE” WHEN WRONG). WHAT OTHER WAYS CAN BEING KIND BE PRODUCTIVE? #prodchat
  27. @rsidneysmith #kindness sounds like a good topic for discussion. Glad to be on board #prodchat
  28. @CliffSiegel1 I’ve seen how negative energy (complaints, anger) tends to attract more of the same. Positivity changes the flow. #prodchat
  29. A3: taking time to show another the ropes can result in greater team prod. down the road I suppose #ProdChat
  30. A3: When friends or employees are having troubles, I’ve learned the best thing to do is listen actively. #kindness #prodchat
  31. @rgfeal sure, happens to me too. But at least the person knows you received it, are working on it. Rather than just radio silence. #prodchat
  32. @smhouston agree… as does forgiveness in response to harm done to one’s self #ProdChat
  33. @rsidneysmith A3) kindness I believe is about advancing the common good, protecting from harm, and assisting others #prodchat
  34. A3: Showing people how to do something (and why), without doing it for them. #kindness #prodchat
  35. A3: Showing people how to do something (and why), without doing it for them. #kindness #prodchat
  36. RT @tburgess57 A3) kindness I believe is about advancing the common good, protecting from harm, and assisting others #prodchat
  37. @rsidneysmith I’m very big on kindness so I saw this and had to jump in! I believe it’s an important success tool many are missing.#prodchat
  38. A3 Going into the day with conscious, heart-centered, kind intentions towards each person, each interaction, each task. #prodchat
  39. @tburgess57 I think adding some recognition of another’s pain/stress/challenge is part of that kindness formula too #ProdChat
  40. Productivity Book Group: SAT AUG 17, 12ET! Join us & discuss MAKING IT ALL WORK (Chs.5-10) by @gtdguy!  http://goo.gl/X85gzm odgtdtprodchat
  41. Great point! MT @fromraewithlove: I’m very big on kindness … I believe it’s an important success tool many are missing. #prodchat
  42. A3: Asking others how you can help them, rather than always wondering why no one is asking to help you. #givefirst #prodchat
  43. Often the kindness you show sometimes doesn’t take root to much later down the road. Lots of delay of gratification is required #ProdChat
  44. @CliffSiegel1 I used to be a funeral director so my opinion on kindness is biased by formal ethics training #prodchat
  45. so true. Everyone suffers, even if you don’t know how/why. MT @CliffSiegel1: recognition of another’s pain/stress/challenge #ProdChat
  46. @tburgess57 What are some of the core ethics principles of your training? #prodchat
  47. @tburgess57 sounds like good training for all of us. Not sure how many ppl are even conversant with that word #ProdChat
  48. MT @rsidneysmith: Asking others how you can help them, rather than always wondering why no one is asking to help you. #givefirst #prodchat
  49. Q4: HOW CAN WE PROMOTE KINDNESS BY BEING KIND TO OURSELVES? #prodchat
  50. @nmhouston Yes! “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” ~Plato #kindness #prodchat
  51. @rsidneysmith protecting from harm, protecting the public health, paternalistic decision making. I have used it in the real world #prodchat
  52. A4: I have found in my years of working with people on their personal productivity that there is much negative self-speak. #prodchat
  53. A4 by showing forgiveness to ourselves when we screw up… erases the myth of being (having to be) perfect #ProdChat
  54. Great ethics prinicples! MT @tburgess57 protecting from harm, protecting the public health, paternalistic decision making. #prodchat
  55. Imperfection is the new black! ;-) MT @CliffSiegel1 A4 by showing forgiveness… erases the myth of being (having to be) perfect #ProdChat
  56. A kind act is not one that would offend public decency no matter how well intentioned #prodchat
  57. A4: I reward myself when I do good for others, as well as when I accomplish tasks or projects that were challenging. #prodchat
  58. A4 Be kind to yourself with greater self-care (more sleep, etc); stronger boundaries; creating more balance work/life #prodchat
  59. Have to run… thanks for the uplifting thoughts all. Have a productive good nite (great 1st tweet chat participation for me!) #ProdChat
  60. A4: I don’t beat myself up when I fail at a reaching a goal. I take it as a learning opp. and a moment to show myself #kindness. #prodchat
  61. @rsidneysmith a4) recognize limits and accept the limits. Work within them #prodchat
  62. MT @nmhouston A4 Be kind to yourself w/ greater self-care (more sleep, etc); stronger boundaries; creating more balance work/life #prodchat
  63. @CliffSiegel1 Thanks for joining us, Cliff! We look forward to having you back again soon! #prodchat
  64. RT @tburgess57 a4) recognize limits and accept the limits. Work within them #prodchat
  65. Another path to kindness: ask, would you talk to someone else as harshly as you talk to yourself? #prodchat
  66. A4: I ask friends to note when I’m not being kind or compassionate to myself, so I recognize patterns. #prodchat
  67. RT @nmhouston Another path to kindness: ask, would you talk to someone else as harshly as you talk to yourself? #prodchat
  68. So true — and difficult for many of us MT @tburgess57: a4) recognize limits and accept the limits. Work within them #prodchat
  69. @xianfox Welcome, Christian! We’re glad you’re here on the #productivity chat…and hopefully with power this week! :-) #prodchat
  70. @xianfox welcome! pull up a chair — (she says, at her standing desk. but that doesn’t sound as friendly.) #prodchat
  71. Kindness does not involve running yourself into the ground because than you are useless and unable to help #prodchat
  72. Q5: WITH SO MANY OBLIGATIONS IN OUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIVES, HOW CAN WE MAKE TIME FOR ACTS OF KINDNESS? #prodchat
  73. @nmhouston failure to accept limits can turn into compassion fatigue #prodchat
  74. @tburgess57 That’s very true! Self-care is as important an aspect of #kindness as care for others. #airplanerule #prodchat
  75. +100 RT @tburgess57: @nmhouston failure to accept limits can turn into compassion fatigue #prodchat
  76. A5: I don’t think you make time for kindness. It’s just a way of living. It shows in many acts each day. #prodchat
  77. A5: I prioritize #kindness at the beginning of every year with 30 days of random acts of kindness to start a good path. #prodchat
  78. A5 Step into the situation with attitude of kindness & actions naturally follow. #prodchat
  79. @profkrg I can definitely see it. But I have #kindness reminders around me just enough so that I’m always looking out for opp’s. #prodchat
  80. @profkrg For example, I helped an older lady today who was lost. She had all the signs of being lost…and I picked up on them. #prodchat
  81. A5 I do Stoplight Blessings. Send kind thoughts to all the other drivers around you, instead of grumbling at red light. #prodchat
  82. @rsidneysmith I honestly think where I live lends to kindness. Things are just more laid back, friendly and caring. #prodchat
  83. A5: At one job, everyone on staff had to spend one lunch hour a month at a nearby soup kitchen. We paired up. It was awesome. #prodchat
  84. @rsidneysmith To me, that’s just the way to be. It’s a normal part if life to help others every day. #prodchat
  85. One of the problems with kindness is some people see kindness as a crime like trying to lure children. Society makes it hard #prodchat
  86. A5: I follow several lists that have volunteer opp’s everyday…and when I have a spare hour, I’ll just do something scheduled. #prodchat
  87. @rsidneysmith The challenge with company-mandated volunteering is that for some it will feel forced or uncomfortable #prodchat
  88. @tburgess57 Oh, do you mean people think an act of #kindness as having an ulterior motive? #prodchat
  89. Q6: HOW CAN WE PROMOTE KINDNESS IN OUR WORK AND HOME CULTURES? #prodchat
  90. @nmhouston I can understand that, but once you were there at that food kitchen and saw the good you were doing, that melted away. #prodchat
  91. A simple act of kindness is to truly acknowledge other people’s contributions — store clerk, waitstaff, etc. #prodchat
  92. @rsidneysmith yes. I think our suspicious society places limits on kindness. It’s terrible #prodchat
  93. RT @nmhouston A simple act of kindness is to truly acknowledge other people’s contributions — store clerk, waitstaff, etc. #prodchat
  94. @nmhouston Yes, people in the hospitality / restaurant industry need more gratitude / #kindness! I need to remember that. #prodchat
  95. @tburgess57 There’s only one thing to do! Give more kindness! :-)) #prodchat
  96. A6: Do unto others. Kindness spreads. Model kind behaviors and actions to create that culture. #prodchat
  97. A6: I want to get the staff together at work and cooperatively choose a charity to volunteer our time at. #prodchat
  98. @rsidneysmith when I travel & someone is really helpful, I also send an email to hotel manager etc. Same for phone reps. #prodchat
  99. A6: Teaching children to be kind in public I think is really good for not just the child but the adults around too. #prodchat
  100. A6: I’ve thought about creating a  http://CharterForCompassion.org rg style “Kindness Pledge” for home and work.prodchatat
  101. I think if kindness has an enemy its entitlement. Entitlement defeats kindness #prodchat
  102. @tburgess57 Antonyms are meanness & cruelty. I think if we focus on avoiding and quashing those, we can increase kindness. :) #prodchat
  103. RT @tburgess57: I think if kindness has an enemy its entitlement. Entitlement defeats kindness #prodchat
  104. RT @tburgess57: I think if kindness has an enemy its entitlement. Entitlement defeats kindness #prodchat
  105. Thanks #productivity enthusiasts for today’s #ProdChat! Join us again next week! Check out the transcript tomorrow!
  106. Thanks @rsidneysmith for a really interesting discussion topic tonight on #prodchat! Lots to think about —
