#ProdChat – 5/8/13 – Compassionate Productivity

#ProdChat – 5/8/13 – Compassionate Productivity

For this week’s #productivity chat, we discussed how compassion works in our productive life! The central question is, how compassionate must you be with yourself and others in order to become and sustain productivity individually and in a team environment? Enjoy the #prodchat transcript!

  1. In case you missed last week’s chat on Life-Work Balance…
  2. And as a reminder…
  3. Productivity Book Group is this Saturday at noon ET! Join us as we discuss Ready for Anything by @gtdguy!  http://ow.ly/kQxia prodchat
  4. And now this week’s #prodchat….
  5. Welcome to #ProdChat, the weekly #productivity chat! Topic: Compassionate Productivity.
  6. Let’s start with intro’s. In a tweet, tell us about you. How’s your productivity this week? #prodchat
  7. Hi, all! Michelle here. Productivity junkie and GTD’r. :) #prodchat
  8. hi, all — I’m Natalie, an academic (Eng Lit) & personal productivity coach. #prodchat
  9. @michgunn: Hi, all! Michelle here. Productivity junkie and GTD’r. :) #prodchat” Hey, Michelle! :)
  10. My productivity has been medium this week. My semester is wrapping up. #prodchat
  11. I’m on my mobile on the move tonight so forgive my typos and brevity! #prodchat
  12. @nmhouston: hi, all — I’m Natalie, an academic (Eng Lit) & personal productivity coach. #prodchat” Hey, Natalie! Great to have you here!
  13. Wow! I can’t even imagine attempting to keep up with #prodchat on a mobile device on the go. Impressive! #prodchat
  14. @profkrg @rsidneysmith I only ever tweet from my phone. Probably explains why. I’m no good at it. #prodchat
  15. A1 Wow… so right out of the gate, huh, Ray? No lead up… just diving in. ;) #prodchat
  16. A1 Wow… so right out of the gate, huh, Ray? No lead up… just diving in. ;) #prodchat
  17. No, I am not compassionate with myself. AT. ALL. #prodchat
  18. No, I am not compassionate with myself. AT. ALL. #prodchat
  19. No, I am not compassionate with myself. AT. ALL. #prodchat
  20. A1 Trying to learn how to be more compassionate with myself. I’m better about that with others than with myself. Working on it. #prodchat
  21. @michgunn I think it’s easier to be compassionate with others. #prodchat
  22. @icnow @profkrg Really? I tweet most of the time from all of my devices but for different functions. #prodchat
  23. A1. Learning to be compassionate towards yourself is a life-long journey. #prodchat
  24. A1. Learning to be compassionate towards yourself is a life-long journey. #prodchat
  25. Agreed! Now to learn to practice that for ourselves! RT @profkrg: @michgunn I think its easier to be compassionate with others. #prodchat
  26. A1: I think I’ve learned to be more compassionate with myself. However, there’s room to grow there. #prodchat
  27. It’s good to bring compassion to that very process, of learning to be more compassionate to oneself. @michgunn @profkrg #prodchat
  28. I’m game! :) RT @nmhouston: A1. Learning to be compassionate towards yourself is a life-long journey. #prodchat
  29. @nmhouston I completely agree, Natalie. If you think you’ve arrived with compassion, there’s likely a problem! #prodchat
  30. *two (D’oh! Dummy! Ugh! Spelling mistake… so dumb…) Just kidding… ;) #prodchat
  31. @LynnWhite welcome, Lynn! Great to have you back. Jump right in and intro and answer Q1. We’re just getting warmed up! #prodchat
  32. @michgunn: *two (D’oh! Dummy! Ugh! Spelling mistake… so dumb…) Just kidding… ;) #prodchat” LMAO!! (Two exclamation points even!)
  33. I’m Lynn. I’m a Web Designer in the DC area. #prodchat
  34. Ha! Compassion, anyone? Too funny. RT @michgunn: *two (D’oh! Dummy! Ugh! Spelling mistake… so dumb…) Just kidding… ;) #prodchat
  35. Q2: HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH NOT ACCOMPLISHING THINGS YOU SET OUT TO? #prodchat
  36. Q2: HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH NOT ACCOMPLISHING THINGS YOU SET OUT TO? #prodchat
  37. @icnow @michgunn No reason for existential crises either tonight based on the #prodchat conversation! ;-P
  38. A1 I usually push it out in my list (start dates), and then reevaluate at my weekly review #prodchat
  39. A1 I usually push it out in my list (start dates), and then reevaluate at my weekly review #prodchat
  40. Q2. I fuss at myself for a minute. Figure out why it didn’t get done and get it done. #prodchat
  41. Q2. I fuss at myself for a minute. Figure out why it didn’t get done and get it done. #prodchat
  42. A2 Usually not getting something done means there’s something about the task or project that just doesn’t sit right with me #prodchat
  43. @profkrg Do you emotionally respond when you realize you planned but didn’t do a task/project? #prodchat
  44. A1 … that’s assuming I’m just not being a baby and procrastinating. ;) #prodchat
  45. Hi everyone sorry I’m late! I’m a very uncompassionate to myself PhD student trying to boost my productivity & finish the diss. #prodchat
  46. @rsidneysmith I usually just add it to the next day’s tasks or figure out when I can do it. #prodchat
  47. But I will admit to also falling prey to negative self talk at times. That’s why I think of compassion as a journey. #prodchat
  48. A2: I find that the less control I feel like I have over not accomplishing the easier it is to move it to another time. #prodchat
  49. Yes, exactly: MT @jodiacampbell: learning to be kinder to myself …particularly when I’m too busy. #prodchat
  50. @nmhouston Some times I speak negatively to myself and I deserve it. For example, when I procrastinate because I’m uncertain. #prodchat
  51. @nmhouston: That is so true. We are our own worst enemy sometimes… #prodchat
  52. @nmhouston Exactly what I was just thinking! Not always easy to cut our own selves some slack. :/ #prodchat
  53. A2 I used to beat myself up v. badly over it. Trying to learn to reevaluate priorities AND judge better how long things tasks take #prodchat
  54. A2: If I had complete control over getting something done and didn’t, I’m far less compassionate with myself. #prodchat
  55. @profkrg @nmhouston Kenna, is the negative self-speak productive for you? Do you get more done because you do that? #prodchat
  56. @profkrg But that doesn’t have to be negative. That can just be a simple question… Like, “Why am I avoiding that task?” #prodchat
  57. @rsidneysmith @nmhouston It make me realize why I’m not doing the task, then do it. #prodchat
  58. @michgunn Or it can be “Come on, Griffin! Get your shit together!” That’s more common. #prodchat
  59. @LynnWhite @nmhouston Lynn, Agreed! And, we can also be our best allies too! :-) It’s all a mindset! #prodchat
  60. @jodiacampbell That’s good that it’s a sign that you know means you need to evaluate processes! #prodchat
  61. @profkrg but isn’t it human to be uncertain sometimes? what if you could see that as a clue to ask what you need to go forward? #prodchat
  62. @profkrg I can be guilty of that too, but I’m trying to realize that sometimes it’s like Natalie said, a chance to re-evaluate #prodchat
  63. Q3: HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH OTHERS WHEN THEY DON’T DO WHAT YOU ASKED AND THEY COMMITTED TO? #prodchat #productivity
  64. Q3: HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH OTHERS WHEN THEY DON’T DO WHAT YOU ASKED AND THEY COMMITTED TO? #prodchat #productivity
  65. @nmhouston That’s it, though. I procrastinate because uncertainty = fear for me. I have to bark myself out of it. #prodchat
  66. @LynnWhite @nmhouston I always want to be my own cheerleader when I’m getting things done, especially when working with a team. #prodchat
  67. @rsidneysmith well I created a lot if health problems for myself bc I was so hard on myself so something had to change. #prodchat
  68. A3. C’mon now… are you looking to pull all the skeletons out of the closet with this tweet chat?!?! #prodchat
  69. A3 Well, I just think “Oh well…” and start over. (NOT) #prodchat
  70. Q3. It drives me crazy! I take such pride in doing something when I commit and when others don’t it makes me very frustrated. #prodchat
  71. @profkrg @nmhouston I’d be curious if you couldn’t sweet-talk yourself into action too, Kenna. :-) #prodchat
  72. Haha I think so! RT @michgunn: A3. C’mon now…are you looking to pull all the skeletons out of the closet with this tweet chat?! #prodchat
  73. A3 It’s a given I’m harder on myself, but I’m not so easy on others either. There, the truth is out… ;) #prodchat
  74. A3 It’s a given I’m harder on myself, but I’m not so easy on others either. There, the truth is out… ;) #prodchat
  75. @jodiacampbell Yes, the body will tell you when something isn’t working. Glad I could help in some way :) #prodchat
  76. A3 how do I respond to them or when I’m by myself? Because those are often two very different things! #prodchat
  77. @jodiacampbell: @rsidneysmith That’s when I started reading #GTD bc @nmhouston wrote about it so much. #prodchat” Go, Natalie!
  78. There’s discomfort and then there’s dirty laundry! ;P RT @rsidneysmith: @michgunn Growth happens through discomfort sometimes. :-P #prodchat
  79. A3: I would not rely on them again. But I work mostly with students, so I question them about their failure to perform. #prodchat
  80. Gotta get comfortable with being uncomfortable. RT @rsidneysmith: @michgunn Growth happens through discomfort sometimes. :-P #prodchat
  81. I loathe incompetence. I can’t deal with that. Type A participants only, please. :) #prodchat
  82. Awesome!! :D RT @jodiacampbell: @rsidneysmith Thats when I started reading #GTD bc @nmhouston wrote about it so much. #prodchat
  83. @nmhouston you certainly did! I realized there were ways to change and increase productivity other than not sleeping. #prodchat
  84. @profkrg It can be easy to fall out of the habit of gentleness. But it is a path to long term change. #prodchat
  85. @michgunn Haha. We can avoid the dirty laundry…you can just talk about the dirt before it got on the clothes! #prodchat
  86. @profkrg I like the concept of coaching them through interrogatives to better commitment! #prodchat
  87. @michgunn Glad it’s not just me! I don’t like to disappoint or be disappointed. #prodchat
  88. @profkrg: I loathe incompetence. I can’t deal with that. Type A participants only, please. :) #prodchat” LOL
  89. Not at all! ;) RT @jodiacampbell: @michgunn Glad its not just me! I dont like to disappoint or be disappointed. #prodchat
  90. Amy Sutherland’s book What Shamu Taught Me is a very interesting & readable book on how positive reinforcement works #prodchata>
  91. @rsidneysmith There are always reasons. You have to discover those first, then determine approach. #prodchat
  92. @rsidneysmith There are always reasons. You have to discover those first, then determine approach. #prodchat
  93. I second that! RT @jodiacampbell: @michgunn Glad it’s not just me! I don’t like to disappoint or be disappointed. #prodchat
  94. A3 I think being Type A makes it hard to imagine that anyone could be anything other than Type A. (I’m Type A, just sayin’) #prodchat
  95. Q4: WHAT ARE SOME TECHNIQUES TO INCREASE YOUR COMPASSION? #prodchat
  96. Q4: WHAT ARE SOME TECHNIQUES TO INCREASE YOUR COMPASSION? #prodchat
  97. @jodiacampbell @michgunn In the spirit of the chat, it happens though…for many reasons. We all need to respond the best way. #prodchat
  98. @michgunn I pity the person in a productivity chat who doesn’t think he/she is Type A. #prodchat
  99. HAAAA!!! Good point! RT @profkrg: @michgunn I pity the person in a productivity chat who doesnt think he/she is Type A. #prodchat
  100. ROFLOL! RT @profkrg: @michgunn I pity the person in a productivity chat who doesn’t think he/she is Type A. #prodchat
  101. @nmhouston My hope is more brain research will show qualitative/quantitative evidence that neg reinforcement is bad. #prodchat
  102. Captured ! MT @nmhouston: Amy Sutherlands book What Shamu Taught Me is a very interesting book on how positive reinforcement works #prodchat
  103. subtweet them RT @rsidneysmith Q3: HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH OTHERS WHEN THEY DON’T DO WHAT YOU ASKED AND THEY COMMITTED TO? #prodchat
  104. @michgunn I would much rather do something myself than rely on people who might not do exactly what I want. #prodchat
  105. Q4. Try to write 5 things I’ve done well each day. It’s a work in progress. #prodchat
  106. @rsidneysmith @michgunn that’s true. I tend to rage about it by myself and then try to be diplomatic to the person. TRY. #prodchat
  107. A4 Sheer overload made me start to be ok with some things getting “delegated to the floor”. Couldn’t beat myself up about it. #prodchat
  108. @jodiacampbell @michgunn I’m the same way. Trying to get out of that. I can’t do everything myself…. #prodchat
  109. A4: I tend to use the Plato advice that others always feel they’re struggling worse on the inside. Think from that perspective. #prodchat
  110. @jodiacampbell I get that, but that’s not sustainable, or even manageable at some levels. It’s a skill worth learning. #prodchat
  111. A4 Breathe for a minute, eyes closed. Then bring to mind a being you cherish (person, animal companion). Feel heart soften. #prodchat
  112. Nice practice! RT @LynnWhite: Q4. Try to write 5 things Ive done well each day. Its a work in progress. #prodchat
  113. Nice practice! RT @LynnWhite: Q4. Try to write 5 things Ive done well each day. Its a work in progress. #prodchat
  114. @profkrg @michgunn Two hands up! (I blame my mother. She’s the exact same way.) #prodchat
  115. :( Hands raised, but trying to hide them. RT @profkrg: @jodiacampbell @michgunn Control freaks, raise your hand. *raises hand* #prodchat
  116. @profkrg @rsidneysmith the problem isn’t needing more compassion but exhausting what you have. Called compassion fatigue #prodchat
  117. @rsidneysmith I work on being compassionate with other people, but also having firm, realistic expectations of them. #prodchat
  118. A4 I now use @idonethis to keep positive abt what I accomplished rather than focus on what I didn’t do. Also thanks to @nmhouston #prodchat
  119. A4: For myself, I know how to motivate myself. I figure don’t “fix” it if it’s not broken. #prodchat
  120. Practicing gratitude also helps activate compassion. #prodchat
  121. RT @profkrg: @rsidneysmith I work on being compassionate with other people, but also having firm, realistic expectations of them. #prodchat
  122. @tburgess57 @profkrg I am not sure whether compassion is like willpower…an exhaustible resource. But it’s an interesting idea! #prodchat
  123. OK, going on my list of practices to start. RT @nmhouston: Practicing gratitude also helps activate compassion. #prodchat
  124. RT @profkrg: A4: For myself, I know how to motivate myself. I figure don’t “fix” it if it’s not broken. #prodchat
  125. @nmhouston: Practicing gratitude also helps activate compassion. #prodchat” So true!
  126. @rsidneysmith @tburgess57 Compassion fatigue a feeling of emotional and physical tiredness resulting from relating too completely. #prodchat
  127. @rsidneysmith @profkrg I used to be a funeral director. I suffered from compassion fatigue during my career.#prodchat
  128. @rsidneysmith @profkrg I used to be a funeral director. I suffered from compassion fatigue during my career.#prodchat
  129. Q5: DO YOU FEEL LIKE MORE COMPASSION AT WORK/SCHOOL WOULD AFFECT YOUR #PRODUCTIVITY? HOW/WHY? #prodchat
  130. @michgunn yep. I’m working on all of this. I expect too much from myself sometimes & shut down when I can’t do it all. #prodchat
  131. @rsidneysmith @tburgess57 CF resembles PTSD symptoms. It’s often seen in counselors who “take on” clients’ emotional burdens. #prodchat
  132. @profkrg @rsidneysmith usually you experience it as hating and resenting the people you help #prodchat
  133. Just realized I sound like a groupie for @nmhouston! That’s embarrassing! #prodchat
  134. @michgunn look up Seligman’s Three Good Things exercise — demonstrated benefits of gratitude practice #prodchat
  135. A5 More compassion at work would definitely increase productivity for oneself and others. Without it, everyone feels bad about… #prodchat
  136. @profkrg @rsidneysmith I don’t think it resembles PTSD at all and I say this as someone who suffers PTSD #prodchat
  137. @tburgess57 @rsidneysmith Researchers identify it as a lower level emotional stress. PTSD, acute, adjustment disorders… #prodchat
  138. A5 …not getting everything done and disappointing others (lack of compassion for self), and then the added punch of rage/anger.. #prodchat
  139. RT @nmhouston: @michgunn look up Seligmans Three Good Things exercise — demonstrated benefits of gratitude practice #prodchat
  140. A5 more compassion at work (teaching) has resulted in less productivity for me bc I get too caught up trying to help my students. #prodchat
  141. A5… from others about the stuff not getting done (lack of compassion from others). At least that’s what I’ve experienced. #prodchat
  142. @michgunn the challange with compassion is you must share it equally. Don’t pick favorites #prodchat
  143. @tburgess57 Diagnostic criteria for PTSD are more stringent. CF is an adjustment disorder, also called vicarious traumatization. #prodchat
  144. A5. Absolutely…I think it starts w/ oneself. People aren’t compassionate towards themselves so it’s hard to give that to others. #prodchat
  145. A5 And, I’ll admit, I’ve been guilty of being on both sides of that equation. Makes for a very unhappy and unhealthy workplace. #prodchat
  146. @profkrg @tburgess57 Unfortunately so many disorders show so many similar overlapping symptoms. #prodchat
  147. @profkrg @jodiacampbell awww. I’m delighted whenever I learn something I’ve said has been of some help to someone. That’s my path. #prodchat
  148. Wow… really spilling all the beans tonight. What else do you want to know, Ray? ;) #prodchat
  149. What’s he trying to do, anyway? RT @michgunn: Wow… really spilling all the beans tonight. What else do you want to know, Ray? ;) #prodchat
  150. Cool! I will! RT @nmhouston: @michgunn look up Seligmans Three Good Things exercise — demonstrated benefits of gratitude practice #prodchat
  151. @nmhouston Isn’t it wonderful to hear that something like #productivity paid forward has such compound benefits to others?! #prodchat
  152. Compassion isn’t the same thing as over-identifying w/someone. Creating healthy boundaries helps take care of yourself & them. #prodchat
  153. @profkrg @michgunn Maybe just try to spread the message that a little more compassion in the world goes a *long* way! :-) *HUG* #prodchat
  154. @rsidneysmith @profkrg I always refer to PTSD as psychiatry’s bastard children. Nobody knows what to do with us #prodchat
  155. @tburgess57 If only I could get on the list for some from myself. ;) #prodchat
  156. Oh, I’m free… Just recounting the fun of yesterday. ;) RT @rsidneysmith: @michgunn The truth sets us free, MG! ;-) #prodchat
  157. @tburgess57 Well, it’s part of the human condition and society has to absorb the suffering…not just psychiatry’s problem! #prodchat
  158. @nmhouston I find that to be such a challenge when I’m invested in their success. I want all of my students to succeed and… #prodchat
  159. @nmhouston compassion is adaptive emotional response. Compassion fatigue is maladaptive. #prodchat
  160. LOL RT @michgunn: Oh, Im free… Just recounting the fun of yesterday. ;) #prodchat
  161. @michgunn right now I am trying to balance compassion for 3 foster cats in my care #prodchat
  162. @nmhouston it’s hard not getting too wrapped up w/ them but its yet another thing I’m working on getting better about. #prodchat
  163. @tburgess57 @rsidneysmith PTSD does seem to be an illness that they manage more than cure. A lifetime of work. #prodchat
  164. @rsidneysmith you never know when something you say will land with someone else, with positive effect #prodchat
  165. To me, compassion for others is easy to have if you care about people. It’s more difficult to show/express. #prodchat
  166. I think he’s looking for a check, not a bill. ;) RT @profkrg: @michgunn Im going to send him a bill for my therapy. #prodchat
  167. Q6: WHAT IS ONE THING YOU CAN DO TOMORROW TO USE COMPASSIONATE PRODUCTIVITY? #prodchat
  168. Q6: WHAT IS ONE THING YOU CAN DO TOMORROW TO USE COMPASSIONATE PRODUCTIVITY? #prodchat
  169. @michgunn You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit. :) #prodchat
  170. Ok gotta get back to writing. Thanks for an insightful #prodchat everyone!
  171. @profkrg @rsidneysmith a lot of the experts are still arguing over the definition and if it’s really a disorder #prodchat
  172. Ha! RT @michgunn: I think hes looking for a check, not a bill. ;) MT @profkrg: Im going to send him a bill for my therapy. #prodchat
  173. Tonight? You go! RT @jodiacampbell: Ok gotta get back to writing. Thanks for an insightful #prodchat everyone!
  174. @jodiacampbell Glad you could join us, Jodi! Happy writing! I have much to do tonight myself. :-) #prodchat
  175. @rsidneysmith take care of yourself first. If you are a mess you are no use to anybody #prodchat
  176. @tburgess57 Like with any DSM definition, I look at them as clinical tools for diagnoses but not a right to self-define. #prodchat
  177. @profkrg I only wrote 300 words today. I need to redo the signposts in my introduction before I get to sleep. Deadline looming! #prodchat
  178. A6 Look at those tasks you’ve been avoiding and give yourself permission to reevaluate them. Maybe they’re are no longer valid. #prodchat
  179. MT @tburgess57: take care of yourself first. If you are a mess you are no use to anybody #prodchat
  180. MT @tburgess57: take care of yourself first. If you are a mess you are no use to anybody #prodchat
  181. A6: Not get all stressed out when I don’t make as much progress as I think I “should” on my dissertation. #prodchat
  182. A6: Not get all stressed out when I don’t make as much progress as I think I “should” on my dissertation. #prodchat
  183. Great question, @rsidneysmith! For me, it’s practicing yoga. Yoga helps me take care of myself & be better to others. #prodchat
  184. Agreed! Put the dropdown air mask on yourself first, then others. MT @tburgess57 take care of yourself first. #prodchat
  185. A6: I’m going to give everyone on this chat a mental hug and be thankful I get to chat with you all every week! #prodchat
  186. +100K RT @tburgess57: @rsidneysmith take care of yourself first. If you are a mess you are no use to anybody #prodchat
  187. MT @nmhouston: Great question, Ray! For me, its practicing yoga. Yoga helps me take care of myself & be better to others. #prodchat
  188. Well, there we have it! Another #prodchat is a set for the history books!
  189. @rsidneysmith I’m not a toucher. Can I just have a “you’re fabulous?” ;) #prodchat
  190. G’night everyone! Great fun chatting tonight. See ya next week! #prodchat
  191. What a great topic, Ray! lots of honesty and learning on the #prodchat tonight! be well, everyone!
  192. @profkrg It’s a mental hug so there will be no touching. But, you *are* fabulous! I’ll make the exception for you. ;-) #prodchat
  193. This was a really good chat tonight. @rsidneysmith kudos to you for doing it from your phone! :-) #prodchat
  194. @rsidneysmith LOL. Thanks, Ray! I wonder if I actually answered any of the questions tonight. #no #prodchat
  195. @nmhouston I really do believe that #compassion is so important to everyone’s productive life! Always a pleasure, Natalie! :-) #prodchat
  196. @profkrg You were too busy jumping back and forth between #prodchat and #wjchat to concentrate. ‘Tis okay! ;-P #prodchat
  197. @rsidneysmith I did that a bit, but I think the questions made me uncomfortable. I’m not a “touchy” kind of girl. #prodchat
  198. @tburgess57 @rsidneysmith It’s my research area, so I can talk about it always. But research and life are not equal. #prodchat
  199. @profkrg Ah, yes. Tonight’s topic does make one have to think AND feel! Promise, next week will be back to gadgets and #GTD talk! #prodchat
  200. @nmhouston that’s exactly what I tell myself! I’ve been much better this semester bc end of last semester was horrendous. #prodchat
